Bad Robot…

The End of Oak Street

The End of Oak Street

The End of Oak Street

The End of Oak Street

The End of Oak Street

The End of Oak Street

The End of Oak Street

The End of Oak Street

THOUGHTS FROM THE FILMMAKERS

David Robert Mitchell

Writer / Director / Producer

On the genesis of the project…

I’d always wanted to make a dinosaur movie, since I was kid.  My dad was obsessed with dinosaurs, he had always dreamed of being a paleontologist and was always reading dinosaur books. So, I grew up around it. We also watched a lot of Ray Harryhausen films as a kid, all the stop-motion animation, like Valley of Gwangi—cowboys discovering an Allosaurus. So, I fell in love with the idea of doing it, but I didn’t know what would be my version of a dinosaur film.  Then a few years ago I was walking through my neighborhood, just a casual stroll, and I was passing by this really interesting house and this alleyway. And I just imagined that there was a dinosaur there digging through the trash. I just could see it, and I stopped and I looked at this interesting tableau of this fantastical thing in this mundane place in a middle-class neighborhood.  And I thought, I want to write something that feels like this.  I want to make a movie that feels like this image in my mind.

On setting the story in the early 1980s…

I was a kid in the `80s and I was just thinking back to that time that was important to me. And I think in that time period, in the `70s and `80s, you had really strong character-based films that you connected with and cared about. So then to take that and put them into very dangerous and interesting situations and have them find ways to navigate that, because you genuinely care it makes the spectacle more meaningful. Not to say that there aren’t modern films that do this.  There are.  But I do think it was probably a high point, that time period.

On the family set up in the film…

All the Platt family members have their own issues, their own struggles, their own little secrets they are unable to share with each other. But when these people find themselves in a dangerous situation, with mortal stakes, it forces them to connect… or not. So we’re telling a story where you are immersed and you really care about these people—having actors as amazing Anne, Ewan, Maisy and Christian, who did such a great job, there’s a genuine connection between them that carries through the movie. We experience that danger with them in a real, sincere way, so that when strange things start to happen, it feels like it’s happening to you. It was important to me that the movie have all of that, all of the spectacle, the suspense, the action, and the personal stakes, all the things that you want from a popcorn movie.

On Anne Hathaway as Denise Platt…

Anne is just an amazing actress, I knew she’d be incredible if we were lucky enough for her to do it.  And it was one thing when we were doing the dramatic moments within the family story, but when we started to get to the suspense and danger and fear, she took it to another level, we all felt it, everyone watching. It was phenomenal, seeing her perform in that way. It was something that I hadn’t seen her do and it was really exciting.  I can’t wait for audiences to see her doing this kind of role, the whole range in terms of strength, fear, pain, and all of that. It’s believable, it’s real.

On Ewan McGregor as Greg Platt…

I was thrilled when Ewan agreed to play the role of Greg. He brings a depth, a charm, a real love to this person who’s struggling about some elements of his life. Ewan portrays that, and it’s really wonderful, and also this really caring husband, this dad… There’s a really loveable, wonderful quality that he has that really allows you entrance into the family and you really connect with them and care. I was so happy when I realized that both Anne and Ewan would be the husband and wife and the parents in this family. And the dynamic that they have, the chemistry that they have, the different shades that their personalities were fantastic.

On the family pet, Starbuck…

Working with animals is always challenging, but our Starbuck—or Starbucks, actually, there were two—I love what they did. It was really nice having them on set and some of the sequences where, for example, Christian, who plays Brian, is interacting with his dog, are really beautiful. And we had a very talented trainer for these really talented dogs, which was great.

On capturing your vision for the film…

Mike Gioulakis was our DP, and we had decided to shoot this in a style that was closer to the ways in which these kinds of movies were made in the late `70s, early `80s. So, it was about not having too much coverage, letting things play out in shots, pacing down the editorial. We wanted a bit of brightness and joy in the lighting and the compositions, especially for certain parts of the movie, and we wanted there to be a certain amount of naturalism. There are moments which are a little bit closer to more elaborate camera work, but I’m hoping they don’t feel that way and when you watch it that it might feel simple, even if it was not. For example, the Allosaurus chase involved a lot of scouting and planning and rehearsals, and camera rehearsals, to figure out how to pull that off. So, a lot of deep planning. And then in other places, because Mike and I have worked together a lot, it was also us taking the plan and having fun on the day and finding interesting ways to see the world and to see the neighborhood.

On shooting in Atlanta, Georgia…

There was a period in the development process and early pre-production where there was talk of where are we making this film? Where are we setting this neighborhood? And I was very happy that we got to shoot in Atlanta because it was really important to me that the neighborhood be real, because we have all these fantastical creations, these strange animals that do not exist. So, I felt like we needed the family to be real, we needed amazing performers, and we also needed a real neighborhood, without too much green screen, too much computer-generated backgrounds.  We had to have real backyards, real houses, real streets, and it was a really extensive search to find the right neighborhood. And our production designer, Maya Shimoguchi, did an incredible job, extensive location scouting, finding practical locations that work with a certain amount of build. Her design of the interior of the house was amazing. I can remember going onto the set of our house, and anyone that went there felt pure joy stepping through that set. It was a little bit of a time capsule, something transported from that era, and really beautiful.

On bringing dinosaurs into the mix…

The dinosaurs in the movie of course started at the script stage. It was very much about what would be interesting in these particular moments, how can I build these set pieces with a combination of joy, humor, terror and suspense, and the suggestion that these animals are just living in this environment.  A certain amount of that was already decided, but then once we were in our planning stage and putting the film together, there was a lot of design work and concept art that helped us narrow it down. It was really fun, because we got to play with that combination of science and creativity.

On collaborating with ILM…

Working with our visual effects supervisor Jay Cooper and with ILM was amazing. We all know how incredible they are and the level of their work, so when we determined that they were going to be designing and creating the dinosaurs for us I was thrilled. Because again, when I wrote the movie I knew that we needed an amazing cast for this to feel real, we needed to film in a real environment, in a real neighborhood, to ground it in naturalism, but we also needed incredible effects. They brought all of their knowledge and creativity to the back and forth about what we wanted these animals to look like, what’s interesting for this movie, are there any unique elements that we can add? That was the process: to create life and to make sure that these were living animals and they’re not just these things that exist for the sake of these moments in the film. That there’s real texture and life there.

J.J. Abrams

Producer

On the genesis of this film, and what appealed to you as a producer…

This was David’s original idea. Bad Robot received the script, and I jumped at the chance to work on such a wonderful Twilight Zone concept with a writer/director I was already a huge fan of.

On what made David Robert Mitchell’s script a great project for Bad Robot…

The wild “what if” premise felt like a perfect fit. Flawed characters in the right, out of this world situation is a wonderful combination.

On David Robert Mitchell’s directing vision for the film and, as a producer, how you helped him realize it…

David always was clear on his vision. He saw this as a grounded, dramatic film that sort of goes insane. But the cinematic style was always his. Super intentional camera work, zooms and split diopters, an almost independent film style mutated with a big studio film. The aesthetic was always a thrilling proposition.

On what each of the actors portraying the Platt family brought to their roles…

The cast is phenomenal. I’ve known Anne a little bit for a long time and have wanted to work with her forever. Ewan as well. So, this was a bit of a dream to get a chance to work with them both. The kids are wonderful as is the supporting cast.

On what makes The End of Oak Street the perfect summer popcorn event film…

The End of Oak Street is a total thrill ride. I’ve seen it with audiences. They scream and laugh and cry and cheer. It’s the sort of film that reminds you why you go to the movies.

On what audiences will be talking about when they leave the theater after seeing this film…

There are quite a few amazing sequences. One in particular that I think could be a classic terror scene. But I think the big takeaway is the thrill of seeing dinosaurs in a suburban setting. The contrast of these wild creatures in an absolutely mundane neighborhood is spectacular. The insane story becomes far more relatable than you might expect.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE CAST

Anne Hathaway

“Denise Platt”

On what drew you to the project…

For my involvement in this movie, you actually have to go back a decade to when I saw David Robert Mitchell's film It Follows. I just loved it so much that I called my representatives and I said, “I think this director is really special, do you think I could please have a meeting with him?” And he and I met for lunch in Los Angeles and we wound up talking for like three hours. And we just had this really wonderful connection, and I left that meeting thinking he's going to call, I'm going to work with him. And then I didn't hear from him for like eight years. But he had said to me, “I think I have something that I want to send to you,” so to me it felt like it was going to be like imminent. [LAUGHS] But eight years later, a script arrives seemingly out of nowhere, like a blast from the past, and it was incredible. I'd never read anything like it. It really focused on human drama as this thing happens to the family, that forces them together, forces them to open up, to trust each other, to rely on each other and to really value each other in a way that maybe they hadn't had an opportunity to do in a long time. And it teaches them where their hearts really are.

On the strange events that happen to the family…

One day, the Platts and their entire neighborhood wake up, and everything looks the same, but it's different. It's their street, but the power's not working and the water's not working and suddenly they start to hear screams, and everything feels very strange. And then things get really, really weird. So, it's a story about a family, when suddenly these supernatural things happen. Reading the script, it reminded me of one of my favorite movies from when I was a kid—which I probably shouldn't have watched when I was a kid, but still it was great—which is Poltergeist. And when I connected with David, I mentioned that as a reference and he said, “That's what I was going for.” And I just said, “Well, I don't know what's going to happen next, but please sign me up, I want to be in this world.”

On “working” with dinosaurs…

It's really interesting, because there's no template for this, in that when you're making it, you don't really know what target it is that you're trying to hit. You just kind of have to stay open, listen to the people around you, listen to your cast, trust everybody, trust your director, trust your cinematographer. And I'm so thrilled because I've seen the film. I think it's terrific, I think it's a perfect summer movie. And now that I look back at the process of getting there, I feel like I got to learn a lot from it, because we weren't making something that was prepackaged; it was coming straight from David's imagination. And it feels really cool to be a part of something original.

On the nostalgic feel of the film…

One of the things I love about this film is that it does remind me of those wonderful films from the `80s, which were almost like family horror movies. Movies that were full of suspense, movies that you could watch with your parents, they weren't too scary for you. You felt grown up and sophisticated and mature that you got to watch this movie where things that were scary were going on. I remember loving that feeling when I was a kid in the `80s and the `90s. And there's something wonderful about this movie that is terrifying, but also really wholesome at the same time. I love the idea that families could go and experience this together. I think this is a perfect movie for a drive-in movie theater, it's made for that. I think about the older kind of scary films, and I could see The End of Oak Street being a movie that I would have loved to go see with my family when I was like 11. So, being in a movie that's part of a legacy like that, that would fit alongside some of the great Amblin movies of the `80s, feels really wonderful.

On your character, Denise Platt…

I play Denise Platt, who is a valued member of her community. She's a mother of two children. She's been married to Greg Platt for the better part of 20 years. And she's at a point in her life where she's beginning to wonder, is this all? My kids don't need me so much. Is this how I see my life unfolding? She's the sort of woman who lived during a time when a lot of women went from their father's home to their husband's home. I don't think she really had a lot of time to explore who she was. So, in the movie, she's asking a lot of difficult questions of herself. She decides to try to explore what the answers could be in a book that she's writing. And it's something that she doesn't want anybody to know about. She only trusts one of her close friends in the neighborhood with it. But she is looking out at the world, trying to figure out who she is, what she values, who she wants to be, when the events of the movie happen, which help her answer that question for herself.

On Denise’s family, the Platts…

Denise Platt has two children. She has Audrey, who's played by Maisy Stella, and Brian, who's played by Christian Convery. She's married to Greg Platt, played by Ewan McGregor. And of course, they have their dog, Starbuck, who is played by two dogs, Buzz and Brisket. And it sounds like such a silly thing to say, especially in the year 2026, when we understand that “normal” can have so many different meanings. But on the surface, they're a very normal family. They live in a small suburb. They eat dinner together. They go to block parties. They take part in potato sack races. The kids have secrets. Greg has a secret. Denise has a secret. But it all feels like big, yet gentle, stuff, although their secrets are keeping them apart. And then this really huge, supernatural thing happens that pushes them together and forces secrets to come out. And they become more than a family, they become each other's means for survival.

On working with Ewan McGregor…

Ewan is such a joy. He's a joy to act with, he's just a joy to sit next to in a director's chair in between shots. He's just a lovely human and I was just really looking forward to seeing him play this part. I always think that Ewan brings the most wonderful energy, just a sense of fun to all of his roles, and so I was really excited to have that dynamic with the person who would be playing my husband, to see what kind of relationship we would have with that. And then once we got into the action portion of the film, all of a sudden you see all of Ewan's many years of stunt training kick in. And he was phenomenal. I mean, he could pick up stunts like that—swing a sledgehammer like it's a lightsaber—so he's just absolutely wonderful, a dream co-star, great laugh, A-pluses across the board.

About Maisy Stella and Christian Convery as Audrey and Brian Platt…

Christian and Maisy, they're such gifted actors. Christian was a really young child when we did this film, and it would just be amazing to see him go in and out of these zones where he would have to be so emotional and focused as an actor, and then they would yell “cut” and he would just be a boy again. It was just lovely to see that. And Maisy and I became really good friends on this one, we just found a wavelength together. So, it did feel like a family in that we all just loved and trusted each other so much. It became a real pleasure to go to work every day and then hang out with these wonderful people.

On the Platt family dog, Starbuck…

Starbuck, who I think once everybody sees the film, will understand is the undisputed hero of the film. He was played by two dogs, Buzz and Brisket. Each one has wonderful strengths. Buzz has one of the most cinematic canine faces I've ever seen. You just put a camera on him, and you just fall in love and you would do anything for this dog. He's just really got very beautiful, soulful eyes. And then you have Brisket, who's like our powerhouse, because the character of Starbuck needed to be emotionally resonant, but then he also needed to do a lot of serious action work, so that's when Brisket would be the one that you could ask to jump into a pool and then swim and then climb himself out of the pool and then run at full speed. So, we were lucky to have both of them.

On building your character, Denise Platt…

It's always a fine balance, because when you're crafting a character, especially the look of a character, it has to feel right to you, but you're working with these amazing artists and you want them to feel like they can get their vision in there as well. My goal for Denise in the beginning was that I wanted her to look like the last person in the world that you would ever expect could stab a Titanoboa. I thought about the time in history when she would have gotten married, and what the world around her would have been like, how things would have changed, so I wanted her to be someone who felt a little bit like a doll, who may have felt like a little girl who hadn't quite grown up all the way. And the more I read the script, I kind of kept coming back to this reference point of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, and I was speaking to Erin Benach, our costume designer, and I said, “Do you think you could please put me in a lot of blue before the dinosaurs come? Because I feel like that's Dorothy in her gingham dress.” There was just something about it that I loved. I just wanted everything to feel very defenseless, so the house coat she wears, it has that pink under layer to it, pink pockets on it, and I just wanted her to feel, again, like the last person you would ever imagine could transform into a beast, so that way when she does, when she's got blood splattered on her and she’s screaming and protecting her children from certain death from a gigantic billion-foot-long snake thing, you're just like, wow, I had you wrong, Denise Platt.

On the thrill and threat of the dinosaurs…

I think what's terrifying is that there's no off switch with these creatures, you're just looking at this killing machine that evolved beautifully to do the thing that it's supposed to do. I thought that the filmmakers did an awesome job when they introduced each one, as though just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, suddenly one even bigger comes around the corner and you're just like, oh I completely understand why that family just had to get out of there!

Ewan McGregor

“Greg Platt”

On what drew you to the project…

What drew me to this film was the fact that it was an unexpected, bonkers script to read, a sort of Spielberg in the 1980s family movie, and I didn’t know where it was going. But what I liked about it was that there was something not quite right about the couple, some unhappiness in their marriage amongst this 1980s perfect life, these Americana vibes. That was intriguing. And then the dinosaurs come in, and I couldn’t believe what was happening as I was reading it. Running for your life, being chased by a massive, unrelenting dinosaur is infinitely fun to see and to do. Every time they go out, they’re fighting for their lives, but there’s also humor in it; there’s some really funny moments.

On your character, Greg Platt…

I play Greg, an `80s dad, an American, blue-collar working guy with a son and a daughter and a wife. He lives in this neighborhood where they’ve obviously been for a while, they know all the neighbors. I wanted to play him in the sort of period correct way, so he’s maybe not quite as present in this family life as you would imagine a dad to be today. He has lost his job, and he’s pretending not to have because he’s embarrassed about it, and he’s trying to keep providing for his family by doing odd jobs, like delivering pizzas at night. His wife, Denise, Annie’s character, is frustrated because he’s always going off to deliver pizzas. So, the family dynamics are spot on, there’s ups and downs, and there’s moments of frustration.

On collaborating with your younger cast…

Annie, Christian, and Maisy were just a joy to work with. As much as the dinosaur action is going to be incredible and insane, I think if you didn’t have a believable family at the heart of it that you cared about, it wouldn’t matter so much. I felt really paternal to the kids, partly as a dad, but also as a sort of older actor with two brand new actors. Maisy is amazing, she’s very true in everything she does in a scene, and you can see that’s important to her. And then Christian, of course he’s a boy, and I have four daughters, so with Maisy I was totally at ease, I’m so familiar with girls. I have a son who was just four years old at the time, and Christian was 13, and I just enjoyed being around him because I don’t know that energy, I don’t know about all the things he wanted to talk about that were so funny and interesting. He’s a very smart kid and a very good actor.

On working alongside Anne Hathaway to build the Platts’ relationship…

I’ve always wanted to work with Annie. I’ve enjoyed her work over the years and as soon as I heard she was doing this, I wanted to read it. She is very real and honest, and fearless in terms of tackling the damage in Greg and Denise’s marriage. You can see that they love each other, and there are moments in their survival story where it’s fueled purely by that love, it was just something that got lost along the way. He’s not open and present enough, and she’s frustrated with him for that. She’s a writer and a dreamer and she wants more from her life, and he’s just a bit static. He’s not moving forward in any way, and in actual fact, we know he lost his job, so he’s slightly moving backwards. The complexity of all that was really fun to do.

On writer/director David Robert Mitchell…

I really like him. I like his writing, I like him as a director, he’s incredibly generous and thoughtful about the acting, but at the same time, he really knows what he wants. And he never allowed the highly technical nature of making a movie about dinosaurs chasing human beings detract from the acting experience of being those human beings.

On the extensive stunt work in the film…

Annie and I had some really long runs to do—over gardens, down streets, jumping fences, running over peoples’ front yards, careful not to put our ankle down a hole. But we had fun doing that, and fighting with the dinosaurs was always fun to do. We had a great stunt coordinator and the stunt people worked really well with us, and it was physical enough to feel realistic and give us what we needed without ever putting us in any danger. And we had a whole neighborhood, which is an amazing set to work on. The people of Atlanta were quite generous to us and I love working there.

On the realistic environments on set…

One of my favorite moments was arriving to Electric Owl Studios in Atlanta, walking through the door and seeing the sets. I love sets on sound stages, it’s sort of your fantasy as a child, so it’s all quite exciting. I walked into this house, and it was absolutely like walking into a real house in the 1980s. Every single detail, every prop, everything in the fridge, everything on the shelves, everywhere you looked was real. It just felt amazing to be in that environment. And the exterior work, that whole neighborhood—such a massive, long street that we shot on—it really gave us another character, which is that neighborhood, transported back in time.

On what audiences will experience when they see The End of Oak Street

I think it will be an amazing experience. I think the experience of the family story put against this crazy, bonkers, running-for-your-life-from-dinosaurs encounter will just blow peoples’ minds. And I think that because the dinosaurs themselves are unbelievably realistic, I would imagine a lot of spilled popcorn, you know?

Maisy Stella

“Audrey Platt”

On what drew you to the project…

I am a huge fan of David Robert Mitchell from It Follows, so my first impression, the first thing I saw was his name on the script, and I was of course immediately intrigued. Then I was so shocked by the script. It was very different from what I knew of him and what he’s made before. I was invested in the family dynamics, which were written so well, and I felt for them immediately when I was reading it.

On the Platt Family dynamics…

I think you’re walking in on a very realistic family dynamic in the ‘80s, where things aren’t talked about as in-depth as maybe families do now. I think in that time it was a little bit different. The Platt family is Denise Platt, who is played by Anne Hathaway, Greg Platt, who’s played by Ewan McGregor, and Brian Platt, who’s played by Christian Convery. And I play Audrey Platt.

On your character, Audrey Platt…

I play Audrey Platt, Greg and Denise’s daughter, and Brian’s sister.  The first thing that I realized about her was how smart she was. She’s a big reader, she’s very dedicated to her love for astronomy and science. I thought it was cool to have a scientific fascination element of her background when she’s then all the sudden faced such an impossible reality.

On working alongside Anne Hathaway…

Audrey’s mom, Denise, is played by Anne Hathaway. I love her. She is so smart, so thorough, and thoughtful with every moment and every line and every beat. She just elevates everything that she touches, and she has such a crazy ability to create tension in a scene, which was so necessary for this story, for all of us. Her instincts are perfect and, honestly, it was inspiring and beautiful to watch her create a character from day one, to think as the character. It was a master class.  It was really amazing to watch.

On working with Ewan McGregor…

Greg, Audrey’s dad, is portrayed by Ewan McGregor, and he couldn’t have brought more warmth to Greg. I honestly came into this with no preconceived ideas of what he and Anne were going to do with their characters, so I was really moved by what they did. Ewan just brought a lot of heart to Greg, I think he has this undeniable thing where you just feel for him in this role. I would just look at him and hurt for him because Ewan brought a sort of magic to Greg.

On costar Christian Convery…

Audrey’s brother is played by Christian Convery, who brought such an innocence to Brian.  That was really important, I think, for filming something that’s set in the ‘80s. I think kids in the ‘80s had a different kind of innocence to them, it was a different way of growing up, and it’s hard to find kids now that can throw away everything that they know of today and go back to this unexposed kid energy. And he just had it, he’s a brilliant actor. He brought emotional intelligence, and his ability to do exactly what he needed to do in every scene was insane.

On working with director David Robert Mitchell…

David’s mind is so fascinating, I was amazed every day by how he sees things. It was surreal to live in this cinematic world that he created.

On the huge action and stunts in the film…

It’s big!  The action and the stunts and the scope of the film feel very exciting. I have not done wire work before, and it was really cool! we could feel the intensity, and I think the action is really nicely balanced with the family’s love and care, and their dynamic with each other. I think it needed that really beautiful blend of both.

On the look and feel of the sets…

I could not have been more taken aback when I came to the set for the first time. I love any type of period piece, but I couldn’t believe how real it felt. Not overdone or schticky, it didn’t feel like an ‘80s homage, it felt really classic. The designers brought a lot of ‘60s things as well, and late ‘70s clothes, and things that weren’t new in the ‘80s, so it all looked lived in. Our house set, between setups, I would just look around. It was very talked about on our set, every single day one of us was, like, can you believe this? This is insane! They killed it.

On working with “dinosaurs”…

Every time we were filming a proper sequence with a dinosaur involved, they showed us a clip of what the dinosaur was going to look like. it was always jarring and helped activate the imagination, all the scared and terrified feelings!

Christian Convery

“Brian Platt”

On what drew you to the project…

I really was drawn in by David’s description of the film when he was showing me the script and whatnot. When I read it, my palms were sweaty. I really loved it, because I could already envision myself playing Brian. I remember a line—Brian walks with trepidation near the tree line—and that really stuck with me. And I actually got to film that. It was so cool to see the evolution from first hearing about this dinosaur movie, this thriller, to actually being on set and getting to perform it. It’s this thriller, this suspenseful, action-packed movie that’s going to keep you on your toes, but at the core of the movie it also is a family drama that’s told in a way that keeps the audience engaged. You are kind of trapped with these characters in a claustrophobic environment because you are in this neighborhood, on this one street. There is no going outside of that, you are trapped, following these characters, knowing that behind every corner there could be a dinosaur. That’s what keeps the movie grounded, really, because in a big movie full of dinosaurs and explosions, what you can really relate to is this family, these core themes, which I found to be something really unique.

On your character, Brian Platt…

I portray Brian Platt.  He is the teenage son of the Platt family, and he’s starting to become older, he’s growing, and he maybe wants to rebel a bit. But at his core, he is a good kid. I think it’s very interesting to see how Brian adapts to this crazy new situation where his whole world is lost, except his family.

On Brian’s family…

The Platt family also consists of Denise Platt, who is the mom.  Greg Platt, who’s the dad, and Audrey Platt, who is the sister. And on the surface, they are a nice and loving family, but below that single layer, some family issues start to arise between Denise and Greg in particular. So, it’s interesting to see how the family deals with that, while also having to deal with these crazy, violent dinosaurs.

On working with Anne Hathaway…

Anne Hathaway portrays Denise. She is a brilliant, talented actor, and she really shows her terror, you see it in her eyes when you’re performing with her.  Working face to face with her, I felt that terror. It gave me chills. I think Anne Hathaway delivers a chilling and brilliant performance.

On working alongside Ewan McGregor…

Ewan McGregor portrays Greg Platt, who is the father of the family.  On the surface Greg seems like this leader, this strong character. But as the movie goes on, you see his vulnerability start to show. And as conflict rises between the Platts, you really see Ewan’s skill in his performance, because he’s able to balance out his vulnerable interior feelings with this fight or flight protector of the family. I think Ewan is extremely talented and hard-working, and he is able to pull that off very well.

On collaborating with Maisy Stella as your sister…

Maisy Stella portrays Audrey Platt, this inherently smart, very wise teenager. I feel that Maisy really kills that role because she doesn’t stick with common stereotypes that “nerds” usually portray. She brings a really humane approach to Audrey, and you get to feel her emotions. You get to feel her vulnerability. Because she is, at the end of the day, this scared teenager. There’s one scene in particular that I really loved filming with her, which is the discussion scene in the living room. You really get to see her intellect come out as she’s portraying this smart, knowledgeable character, but you also see the emotional side of her. And you see her terror. You see that she doesn’t know what’s next, because at the end of the day, all humans have a limit, they can’t be everything all at once. And I love how Maisy shows vulnerability in her character.

On Brian and Audrey’s relationship…

Brian and Audrey have that classic sibling bond, they’re always there for each other. You really see how they support each other throughout the movie. And Brian sees that there is some tension between their parents, so he tries to uncover more, and his sister’s always there to help him get through everything.

On collaborating with director David Robert Mitchell…

Working with David Robert Mitchell was an unforgettable experience. I had also seen his other movies, such as It Follows, which is a brilliant film, and I was very excited to work with him. One thing that I really do love about working with David is the way that he talks to you. He gets to know you on a personal level, and when you’re on set, you feel like you’re working in a safe, comfortable environment where you can ask all of the questions that you need to. He’ll pull you to the side and give you the time that you need as an actor, you can have a conversation with him any time.

On what happens on Oak Street…

The big event on Oak Street happens when the neighborhood gets transported into a prehistoric world full of murderous dinosaurs. And it all happens in the blink of an eye. There are flashes of light. There is a sudden change in pressure and your ears pop. And there’s a change in temperature as well. And you see the family start to theorize what could possibly be the root cause of this. No one really knows what has happened. And suddenly, in the blink of an eye, you’re gonna hear screams!  You’re gonna hear crashes!  And you’re eventually gonna see some crazy, huge dinosaurs chasing you down. But, at the end of the day, they have to focus on what’s at hand because they are about to get absolutely annihilated by dinosaurs if they don’t start moving quickly.

On bearing the wounds of battle…

Brian does have a lot of wounds on him, and behind the scenes I got to collaborate with the makeup team, who are extremely talented.  They started experimenting with how big they wanted the bruises to be, and where, and how much blood was going to come out of me on the day. And we eventually decided on having an eye bruise right here, a nosebleed right here. It was all practical makeup, they were using classic coloring makeup and dressing on me every time. And before the scenes, they would also put fresh blood on me, so it could drip down my face.  Pretty gnarly!

On the scope and scale of the film…

The scale of the action on Oak Street is definitely not what you would see in a normal action movie, because there are dinosaurs!  There are ravenous, murderous dinosaurs that are constantly chasing our beloved protagonists throughout this film. There’s a lot of fence hopping. There is a lot of screaming. There are a lot of rooftops and a lot of jumping. Throughout this movie, you have all these stunts. And Brian’s unique weapon of choice is the bow and arrow, we see that throughout the movie. So, I got to do bow and arrow training, which was pretty cool. On the day, you’re not actually going to have dinosaurs facing you down, of course, but that is the beauty of filmmaking. With visual effects and a wonderful stunt team, you can make anything come alive. And in this film, you will be on the edge of your seat, biting your nails as our characters get absolutely chased down by dinosaurs.

On stepping back in time…

When I first read the script, I was like, “Oh! It’s going to be a nice ‘80s movie, but I didn’t realize how ‘80s it was really going to get! When I went in for my wardrobe fittings, I was shown these vintage clothes, stuff that I’ve never seen before, and when I put them on, I felt like a complete different person! I felt like Brian Platt. Even going to the hair department, they feathered my hair, and that’s Brian’s signature hair throughout the movie.

On stepping into the family home…

I remember going to set for the first time, specifically the indoor Platt house, and walking into my room and seeing this totally vintage wallpaper all over the room. And the little details, such as what’s engraved on my trophies, to the big things like the bed. It was all vintage and it really set the tone for the movie.

On what audiences will experience when they see The End of Oak Street

When watching The End of Oak Street, audiences can expect a very suspenseful and action-packed film full of ravenous dinosaurs and murderous creatures that try to hunt down the family and their neighbors the entire time. Audiences are going to walk out of that movie theater with their hearts pumping, their adrenaline rushing, and their nails completely gone, because they had bit them all off!

PRODUCTION FACTS

After an extensive search across metro Atlanta, the filmmakers discovered Wisteria Gardens, a neighborhood that had changed remarkably little since the 1960s. Its mature trees, authentic homes and untouched streets became the perfect stand-in for suburban Michigan and provided the ideal foundation for Oak Street.

Production designer Maya Shimoguchi and set decorator Missy Parker approached every home as though generations of families had lived there. Every room was filled with carefully chosen objects, photographs, books and keepsakes that reflected decades of everyday life, creating a neighborhood that felt genuinely lived in rather than decorated for a film.

Long before Audrey Platt speaks, audiences learn about her through the details surrounding her. Science posters, handwritten classroom notes, music memorabilia, childhood keepsakes and carefully chosen artwork reflect a curious teenager growing up in 1982.

The art department sourced thousands of authentic household items from estate sales, Facebook Marketplace and local homes. Furniture, appliances, wrapping paper, spice racks, television guides and family photographs all helped transform each home into a believable Midwestern residence.

One of the production's largest practical builds was a full-scale house engineered specifically for one of the film's biggest action sequences. Constructed in the middle of the neighborhood, the structure allowed a car to safely crash through the home while protecting the surrounding locations.

Rather than filming atop an existing home, the production constructed a full-scale rooftop set in an empty parking lot. The custom build gave filmmakers complete control over camera placement, lighting and stunt work while perfectly matching the Platt family's house.

Rather than leaning into oversized hair, neon colors and exaggerated fashion, the costume, hair and makeup departments approached 1982 as a moment of transition. The creative teams focused on recreating an authentic Midwestern community where styles evolved naturally from the previous decade, allowing audiences to believe these were real families rather than characters in period costumes.

Because the story unfolds over only a few days and the costumes had to survive action, mud, blood and continuity requirements, most of the principal wardrobe was built from scratch. Authentic vintage pieces simply couldn't be sourced in the quantities needed for production.

Hair, makeup and costumes meticulously tracked every bruise, scrape, stain and wrinkle as the Platt family's journey intensified. Extensive continuity photography ensured every mark appeared in exactly the right place, despite filming out of sequence.

Production design, costumes, hair and makeup constantly collaborated, comparing fabrics, wallpaper, furniture and lighting so every character felt naturally connected to the world of Oak Street.

Hair department head John Tarro modeled Greg Platt's feathered hairstyle after Harrison Ford's late-1970s look. When Ewan McGregor arrived for prep, he brought the exact same reference image.

One of Brian's signature striped polos existed as a single vintage shirt. The costume department recreated it from scratch, even sourcing and dyeing the perfect knit collar.

David Robert Mitchell and ILM set out to create dinosaurs that felt like living animals rather than movie monsters. Every design began with paleontological research before imagination filled in the unknowns.

Unlike many dinosaur films, The End of Oak Street intentionally features species from different prehistoric eras. Rather than striving for strict chronological accuracy, Mitchell embraced a mix of dinosaurs to heighten the mystery surrounding the film's supernatural time-travel portal, reinforcing the idea that creatures from across millions of years of Earth's history have been pulled into the same neighborhood.

Scars, chipped teeth, worn scales and battle damage suggest each creature had survived long before entering the story, giving the prehistoric world a lived-in authenticity.

Modern birds—including emus, ostriches and baby chicks—inspired feather patterns, movement and coloration, helping ground the creatures in contemporary science.

Each dinosaur was constructed digitally beginning with a skeleton, followed by muscles, fat, skin, scales and feathers so every movement rippled naturally through the body.

Augmented-reality tools allowed the cast and crew to preview dinosaur placement and scale on set before the creatures were added in post-production.

To avoid familiar science-fiction imagery, the visual effects team studied zero-gravity water experiments aboard the International Space Station to develop the portals' distinctive appearance.

For the Titanoboa sequence, production built a full-sized practical stand-in so performers could physically interact with the creature before ILM completed the final visual effects.

Director David Robert Mitchell wanted audiences to see the principal cast running, climbing and scrambling whenever possible. Stunt performers rehearsed sequences first, but the actors completed much of the action seen on screen.

Hidden footholds, lowered crossbars and discreet safety features were built into neighborhood fences so chase scenes could be performed safely without changing their appearance.

Gray-suited performers, oversized dinosaur heads and practical reference rigs gave actors believable eyelines and movement while providing valuable reference for ILM.

After seeing David Robert Mitchell's It Follows, Anne Hathaway asked to meet the filmmaker for lunch. Mitchell mentioned he had a future project in mind, but nearly eight years passed before the screenplay for The End of Oak Street finally arrived. Hathaway immediately connected with the script, beginning a collaboration that had been years in the making.

Long before cameras rolled on the film's biggest action sequences, Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery developed the easy chemistry the filmmakers had hoped for. Between takes they spent time together talking and laughing, creating the genuine warmth that anchors the Platt family on screen.

Maisy Stella has described watching Anne Hathaway work as a master class in acting. Observing Hathaway's process from the first day of filming through the final scenes gave Stella a firsthand look at how an experienced actor builds a character while remaining present and collaborative.

Both on and off camera, Ewan McGregor emerged as the emotional center of the cast. Anne Hathaway admired his effortless transition into demanding stunt work, while Maisy Stella credits his warmth and humor with helping the cast quickly feel like a believable family.

Many scenes were performed opposite gray-suited performers carrying dinosaur reference heads and practical rigs. Hathaway joked that watching the prancing dinosaurs between takes often left the cast trying not to laugh before the cameras rolled.

When Christian Convery encountered the production's full-sized practical Titanoboa for the first time, his startled reaction required very little acting. The life-sized stand-in gave the young actor something tangible to respond to before ILM completed the finished creature.

Starbuck, the family dog, was brought to life by two Australian Cattle Dogs: Buzz, who excelled in quieter emotional moments, and Brisket, who handled many of the film's physically demanding action sequences. Together they created one unforgettable canine companion.

Before making his feature-film debut, Brisket had competed multiple times at Westminster, earned numerous titles and was named Best of Breed at the National Dog Show. His experience made him remarkably comfortable on a busy film set.

Trainer Kent Weinheimer taught Brisket several new behaviors specifically for the production, including reacting to dinosaurs that only existed in the actors' imaginations during filming. According to Weinheimer, some behaviors were learned in just a few repetitions.

Between takes, Brisket often ignored his assigned seat and curled up beside Anne Hathaway instead. Their friendship quickly became an on-set favorite, and Hathaway has joked that pizza was more than enough motivation to keep Brisket happy.

Brisket formed close bonds with Anne Hathaway, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery, becoming a source of comic relief and comfort during long days of action-heavy filming. By the end of production, Starbuck had become as much a member of the family off camera as he was on screen.
